While the problem of global warming is a planetary issue, we can individually make a difference. Saving the planet has to start from the ground up, first with awareness, then understanding then execution. Drive a fuel-efficient car. Hybrid cars run on both gasoline and electricity and according to consumer reports are the most fuel-efficient vehicles. Buy energy efficient appliances. Look for the Energy Star label when you are purchasing your appliances. For example. using an Enegy Star refrigerator will save you $100 a year on your electricity bill. For more information visit energystar.gov.
Replace your light bulbs with energy efficient light bulbs. Compact florescent light bulbs last much longer than traditional light bulbs and use far less energy. You will save about $90 per year by replacing 5 bulbs with compact florescent bulbs. If every American household replaced 5 bulbs, it would save as much every as removing 8 million cars off of the road.
At home, reducing your garbage by 25 percent will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,000 pounds per year. Recycle aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard and newspapers can reduce your home's carbon dioxide emissions by 850 pounds per year.
At the office, implement a recycling program. Recycle office paper, newspapers, beverage containers, electronic equipment and batteries.You can reduce, reuse and recycle at the office by using two-sided printing and copying; buying supplies made with recycled content; and recycling used printer cartridges. For your old electronics, investigate leasing programs to ensure reuse and recycling or donate used equipment to schools or other organizations.
